One of nine siblings in a Catholic family in St. Louis, Mo., he attended church schools from first grade through college. At St. Louis University in the late 1960s, he embraced the Jesuits’ social justice ethos. Fiery and bearded, he filed as a conscientious objector. As an alternative to the military, he spent two years in Portland as a Jesuit Volunteer, working in a public interest alfa medical insurance law firm.
On occasion, he lectures at law schools, including Lewis and Clark, where he obtained a degree in 1976. Griffin neither feels built for public office, nor is he holding his breath for a judgeship.
