HR is perfectly positioned to provide the education necessary to reduce the numbers of workers who reach retirement only to find that medical costs require a substantial modification of anticipated lifestyles. "The majority of employers don't have this particular topic on their educational radar screen," says Mike Morfe, senior vice president for Aon in Somerset, N.J.
He says HR professionals too often rely on vendor tools for employee retirement planning that are inadequate for the task. The typical tool determines the amount of income a worker needs after retirement based on is or her income needs prior to retirement, he says. "That is not a sophisticated enough tool," he says. "The lack of sophisticated modeling really leaves an educational hole." He says HR needs to educate workers on the likely extent of consumption of medical care in retirement.
