Effordable Medical Insurance

The Department stated it is normal administrative practice for a person to be asked at admission into the public hospital system whether he/she is covered by private effordable medical insurance. However, this is not a requirement imposed by the Department. In a statement to IMN, the HSE said that patients with private medical insurance are entitled to utilise the public health system as public patients if they wish.

There is nothing in legislation that prevents the NTPF from treating patients with private effordable medical insurance , nor is there any requirement that the NTPF asks a patient it is treating whether they have health insurance. The Fund told IMN that it deals with public patients who have been waiting three months or more for an operation through the public hospital system. Once a public patient is referred through the public hospital system and has met this criterion they can be eligible for treatment
